Sunday Night Lights

June 30, 2013

At exactly 7pm the thousands of light bulbs adorning the Mysore Palace are illuminated and you can actually hear the sounds of the bulbs popping into action. The sound is so loud that it startles the birds that have come to rest on the palace. The lighting of the palace is only done on Sundays and public holidays so the grounds were crowded with families and tourists eager to see the show. Along with the lights there was low volume music being played by something resembling an orchestra at the base of the palace. As darkness fell, the 98,260 light bulbs shimmered in the twilight drawing the focus of everyone’s camera or cell phone.

After the long drive from the un-enthralling elephant park we arrived too late to see the inside of the palace, although there is no photography allowed inside anyways. However, you can get a good idea of its opulence via the online virtual tour. Seeing it in person will have to wait for another time.
